OnePlus is recognized for being a developer-friendly manufacturer. OnePlus gives developers all the tools they need to test their new applications and custom UIs. To alter any Android smartphone, the first and most important step is to unlock the bootloader and get root access.
In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to root the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro using Magisk instead of TWRP (aka TeamWin Recovery Project). The processes are a little difficult at first, but after you get the hang of it, it will be a piece of cake.
Note: Although the procedure outlined below is 100 percent safe to use, TechLatest cannot be held liable for any bricking, hardware, or software issues that may arise as a result of following this advice.
What is the definition of rooting?
While rooting may seem frightening, it merely refers to gaining access to commands, system files, and folder locations that are normally restricted to the user. Rooting Android is similar to elevating oneself from a system user to an administrator, with the added flexibility and hazards that come with having greater power over your device’s inner workings. With tremendous power comes great responsibility, as well as everything else!
Adding root to Android entails becoming a superuser, which is a Linux command that you may be acquainted with. In many respects, you might consider this more of a restoration of a feature that should have been there all along!
Rooting is no longer required for flashing a custom ROM, however it is recommended in certain circumstances to take use of the most intriguing features.
What is the Process of Rooting?
Rooting usually involves three steps: unlocking the bootloader, flashing a new recovery, and finally flashing a ZIP file that grants root access using the new recovery.
The first thing you’ll need is a bootloader that’s been unlocked. To unlock the bootloader on most common smartphones, there is a workaround. Before continuing, do a quick Google search to see whether your device’s bootloader can be unlocked.
After you’ve unlocked the bootloader, you’ll need to switch from system recovery to custom recovery. Flashing zips, installing customizations, making backups, and running commands are all possible with a third-party recovery like TWRP. We’re going to utilize our new recovery to flash a.ZIP file that will provide us root access.

Setup Fastboot and ADB in the first step.
What is the ADB?
ADB stands for Android Debug Bridge, and it is a command-line tool that allows you to access any aspect of your Android through the command line. It’s an utility for flashing TWRP recovery and unlocking bootloaders.
What exactly is Fastboot?
Fastboot is a mechanism that allows you to re-flash your Android device’s system partition. It’s a little but powerful utility that comes with the Android SDK (Software Developer Kit), and it’s an alternative to all the recovery mode upgrades and installs. Fastboot needs a device with an unlocked bootloader for re-flashing the system partition.
Fastboot is three separate things under the same name, according to Android Central.
- A communication mechanism between your phone’s hardware and a computer.
- When the phone is in Fastboot/bootloader mode, software executes on it.
- The executable file on your computer that allows them to communicate with one another.
Fastboot mode is not available to users on all Android devices; it is only available when Nexus devices have activated it by default. Fastboot mode is enabled on a variety of phones thanks to several independent Android developers and tech enthusiasts.
Check out our thorough guide on setting up fastboot and ADB in any operating system, including Windows, Linux, and macOS, to get everything set up correctly.

Step 2: Remove the Bootloader
On your phone, the bootloader is a piece of software that starts the system recovery and operating system. This is the first piece of software that executes when you turn on your phone. The bootloader, or simply bootloader, is the most basic software on your phone that initiates recovery and subsequently the main operating system.
And unlocking the bootloader means you’re gaining access to the sole method to tweak the core operating system; the functionalities range from rooting the device to giving you full access to the system and replacing the default operating system with any other stock Android OS or custom UI based on Android.
We’ve prepared a full tutorial on how to unlock the bootloader on the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro, so check it out.

Step 3: Get a copy of the stock firmware.
Because the devices are new, OnePlus has yet to add the firmware to their official website, but thanks to the people at XDA-Developers, we now have the download links.
Firmware for the OnePlus 9 may be downloaded here.
- Full OTA for India (11.2.1.1.LE25DA).
- Full OTA (11.2.1.1.LE25BA) in Europe
- Full OTA (11.2.1.1.LE25AA) on global (11.2.1.1.LE25AA).
Firmware for the OnePlus 9 Pro may be downloaded here.
- Full OTA for India (11.2.1.1.LE15DA).
- Full OTA (11.2.1.1.LE15BA) in Europe
- Full OTA (11.2.1.1.LE15AA) on the global level
Step 4: Open the Firmware and extract the boot.img file.
This is a difficult step since you’ll need to install Python and perform a few other things in order to extract the boot.img file from the downloaded firmware. This essay will not go through each step in detail. But, for your convenience, we’ve included a link to a fantastic tutorial created by Sadique Hassan (of DroidWin); just read that post and you’ll be OK.

However, if you want completely extracted boot.img files, utilize the URLs below to acquire the most recent boot.img files; we always advise you to extract the files manually.
Step 5: Using Magisk, patch the boot.img file.
We’re going to utilize magisk to alter the boot.img file so that it may be used to root the device.
- To begin, browse to this Github repository and download the most recent version of Magisk Manager. Under the asset area, you’ll find the most recent release.
- After installing the apk file, go to the app drawer and launch the Magisk Manager.
- When you first launch the Magisk Manager, you’ll see a ‘Install’ button in front of the Magisk area.
- Select the ‘Select and Patch a file’ radio button after clicking that button. This will launch the file explorer, from which you may go to the boot.img file you previously extracted.
- Choose the boot.img file and use Magisk Manager to patch it.
- The Magisk Manager will automatically download the patch file after a successful completion. Keep it in a secure location (the ADB directory on your PC will a perfect place).
If you don’t want to go through all of this, use the patched boot.img files below; we always advocate patching the files manually.
Step 6: Start the computer in Fastboot Mode.
- Connect your device to the PC that was used to set up fastboot and ADB.
- Then you should open the terminal. To start the ADB daemon, make sure your Terminal is in the same location as your ADB tools, and then type the following command.
adb gadgets
- The device (serial number) will be listed in the terminal window after you run the aforementioned command.
- To open the bootloader, enter and run the following command (fastboot mode).
adb bootloader reboot
- To check the fastboot mode, use the following command.
gadgets that start up quickly
- If you obtain the same serial number as we did in ABD mode, followed by the fastboot keyword, the connection is successful. [Do not shut the terminal window; we will return to it in the following step.]
Step 7: Flash the Patched File to Root the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro.
We’ll continue rooting the device via the terminal now that we’ve transferred the previously patched boot.img file (Step 5) into the ADB directory on our PC and the terminal (Step 6) is already open.
- To run the command, type it in the terminal window and press enter.
magisk patched.img fastboot flash boot
- After that, execute the following command to restore the device to its original state:
restarting fastboot
