DD is a desktop application that lets you view and edit your digital photos in a simple and fun way. It was designed for people who want to be able to share their images with friends and family, but don’t want to spend hours tinkering with software settings or learning how to use their camera’s RAW format.
DD is a command line tool that allows users to create and extract an image of a disc. It can also be used to copy discs and convert between formats.
You’re light years ahead of the typical Internet user when it comes to Internet security and preserving your anonymity and privacy. Today’s Internet environment is more dangerous than ever before, with numerous assaults every day – both by ordinary hackers and state eavesdropping techniques like those used by the National Security Agency (NSA).
Using the Internet without a security device like a VPN tunnel is a recipe for disaster, but there are plenty of additional reasons to use VPNs every time you open your preferred browser.
Regrettably, many nations throughout the world have strict censorship policies. And, more often than not, Internet users are perplexed as to why their country’s government restricts access to specific websites. It’s very unusual for governments across the world to block whole websites, including some of today’s most popular online services like Facebook, Google, YouTube, and just about any streaming video or music service.
Would you really want to take the chance of a foreign government or a hacker gaining access to your personal information while it is in transit across the Internet? Obviously not. Similarly, most individuals find restrictions on their freedoms of speech and information intolerable.
I do, however, have both good and terrible news for you. The good news is that utilizing a VPN connection to address all of these issues is simple. The bad news is that most (but not all) providers only allow simultaneous connections between two devices. Some even allow just one laptop/desktop computer and one mobile device to be connected at the same time.
This, though, is unacceptable. We live in an information age, and the majority of individuals own several devices, including laptops, smartphones, tablets, desktop computers, and a range of other computing systems.
The worldwide information infrastructure is evolving to accommodate the most recent trend: the Internet of Things (IoT). Devices that need an Internet connection outweigh the world population, believe it or not!
How on Earth is the typical user expected to get by with just two simultaneous connections with so many devices to protect with VPN tunnels? Worse still, what about individuals who wish to share an account with relatives and friends?
For Local Area Networks, the Best VPN Solution (LANs)
What if I told you there’s a smart technique that almost every user can use to get around the typical VPN provider’s simultaneous connection restrictions? That’s right, there is!
Rather than creating a VPN tunnel between your computer (or mobile device) and the VPN server, you may build one between your home router and the VPN server. As long as those devices are linked to your home’s network, whether wired or wireless, users may protect practically any number of devices at the same time.
There’s just one issue. The default software (called firmware) on most residential wireless routers is incapable of creating a VPN connection. Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of customers can utilize totally free firmware to boost the capabilities of their basic routers and take better use of their hardware. We’ll look at DD-WRT today, but there are other free options, such as Tomato, that can improve the capabilities of your basic router…for free!
DD-WRT Warnings
The goal is to update the default firmware on your home wireless router to include code that enables your router to establish a VPN tunnel with a server from your provider (among a slew of other helpful capabilities).
However, DD-WRT is not compatible with all routers. Most popular routers, however, are capable of running this code, and a full list of compatible models may be seen here.
The update procedure, believe it or not, is so easy and clear that even non-technical people may do it without difficulty. However, the first step is to ensure that your router model is supported.
Then it’s only a matter of updating your router firmware and setting up a VPN tunnel to your VPN service provider’s server. Then, regardless of how many devices utilize your local network, your home network will have a ‘always-on’ VPN connection that protects all Internet traffic coming from your house.
DD-WRT Advantages and Features
DD-WRT comes with a slew of helpful features that aren’t typically included in OEM firmware. You can get the following advantages and features for free after upgrading the code on your router to DD-WRT:
- Increase overall Internet performance and speed by lowering processor, memory, and latency overhead from your local computer to your router.
- Encrypt all local traffic (or just a portion of it) if you choose.
- NAS (Network Attached Storage) capabilities, printer sharing, and even file server capability are all available as extras.
- The ability to connect to your private home network through a VPN tunnel
- Unblock websites on all connected devices to your local network.
What You Will Require
To get started, you’ll need a few items. To begin, you’ll need a router that works with the DD-WRT firmware. Users will also need a router with at least 8MB of RAM.
Users will also need an Ethernet cable to connect their laptop to their network. Last but not least, users will want to have their VPN login and password close to hand.
The DD-WRT Configuration Procedure
The installation procedure (also known as flashing your router) is very straightforward. Simply follow the instructions below:
- Make sure your router is capable of running DD-WRT before proceeding. If your router isn’t competent, you may upgrade to a new one that can run DD-WRT.
- After that, you must download the.bin file that includes the code for your specific router model. The correct file to download is labeled “factory to DD-WRT.”
- The final step is to reset your router 30/30/30 times. Simply press and hold the reset button on your router for 90 seconds to complete this process. Remove the power cord from your router once the first 30 seconds have passed, remembering to keep the reset button pushed the whole time. After that, give it another 30 seconds. Finally, reconnect the power cord for 30 seconds while keeping the reset button firmly held. The 30/30/30 reset will be completed using this method.
- Now you must use an Ethernet wire to connect your computer to the router.
- 5. Go to your router’s web interface by entering the default IP address into a web browser. The default IP address of any home router is almost always 192.168.1.1. However, this varies somewhat depending on the router type. If 192.168.1.1 does not bring up the setup interface in your web browser, see your user manual.
- Although each router model differs somewhat, most include an Administration or System Tools option that enables users to update firmware. If one of these two choices isn’t accessible, see your router’s handbook.
- Click the firmware upgrade button and go to the DD-WRT.bin file you downloaded. Wait until the router has automatically restarted after you upload the code (and typically click the Apply Changes button).
- Reset to 30/30/30 once again.
- Refresh the web interface once the reset procedure is completed (IP address of 192.168.1.1). DD-default WRT’s login credentials are admin/admin/admin/admin/admin/admin/admin/admin/admin/admin/admin/admin/admin/admin/admi The process of upgrading is now complete! All that’s left is to set up an OpenVPN connection between the router and the server of your VPN service provider.
VPN Configuration on a Router
There are two main methods to create a VPN connection with your provider inside the constraints of the DD-WRT firmware. Use the graphical user interface (which is considerably simpler) or the command line. Because the overwhelming majority of VPN providers give free OpenVPN configuration files, this is the recommended setup we’ll go over in depth in this guide.
- Log in to your DD-WRT router once it has been updated. Then go to Services and choose VPN from the drop-down menu. Enable OpenVPN from this interface.
- In a text editor, open the.ovpn file. Notepad is available for Windows users. The goal is to copy the code into the GUI (ctrl + c, ctrl + v).
- All we need to do now is “plug and chug.” Simply paste the information below into the relevant areas. Copy the appropriate information from your text file into the Server IP or Name text box. Because the information is in the provider.com xxxx format, you will recognize it (xxxx is the required port).
- Now search for the TLS AUTH KEY field in your text document and copy the necessary information between the tls-auth> and /tls-auth> tags.
- Then, in the CA Cert box, copy and paste the necessary information from your downloaded text document between the ca> and /ca> tags.
- Copy and paste the information between the cert> and /cert> tags into the Public Client Cert box in the following step.
- Finally, copy and paste the content in the Private Client Key box between the key> and /key> tags (the worst is over!).
- Make sure you hit the save button now. Then, on the next screen, click the apply button.
- There’s just one last thing to do! By going to Status and selecting OpenVPN, you can now double-check that the VPN tunnel has been created. A plethora of logging messages should confirm that your VPN tunnel is up and functioning. You may not have copied and pasted the data properly if your VPN tunnel hasn’t formed. In this case, the best course of action is to call customer service, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week from almost any reputable supplier.
